This is a sobering time in the world with so much in the future feeling uncertain. And yet, it is also the time of year to look ahead and get everything set for the farming season that is upon us.
So with one eye on the news, and the other eye on the melting snow out the window, we are planting our garden starts under grow lights, evaporating maple sap, anticipating the baby goats to be born, ordering seeds and our next step will be to order lambs and chicks to be butchered later this summer or fall.
A note on the lambs: this spring we are starting over with our sheep herd, switching to a new breed. So this year we will not have lambs born on our farm, but our family is going to purchase a feeder lamb to raise for meat. If you would like us to order another lamb (you could also order a half lamb and we’ll buddy two orders together) please let us know. We would be happy raise you some happy, healthy meat this summer.
We also are going to order more Ranger chickens. This breed is excellent at foraging and makes very tasty meat. They will be butchered approximate mid-July.The price is $4.50 a pound, or about $18 for a 4lb bird.
We are hoping to order our chicks and lambs as soon as possible, so please let us know by Wednesday if you are interested in chicken or lamb this year.
Thanks for your support of locally grown food!
